Baby led weaning – a few months in

Baby led weaning is something I look forward every time my babies get to the 6 months mark. There is nothing I love more that watching them experiment with their food and trying different textures and flavours.

I start of with baby purées (you can read the article “ Starting solids – the start & the plan” to find out how I prefer to introduce solids at first) and then I slowly add a few pieces of each food here and there until I am confident enough to give them a full meal without blending it at all.

With the baby led weaning I always start with the type of foods I am confident enough that they won’t choke on and then introduce new foods when I feel like they can eat them. Both of my kids had a banana at first. It is mushy enough that they won’t find it hard to swallow and it is also something kids absolutely are obsessed with. I then introduce other foods such as scrambled eggs, or shredded chicken, shredded cheese and then slowly start introducing bread, ham, broccoli and all the other fun foods for them to try. There are guides online on how to cut each food/fruit when baby led weaning but I would say go with your instinct. You know your baby best.

George was a bit of a fussy eater, he would eat but it would take ages for him to finish his meal and I had to use all kinds of distractions. But he also preferred baby purées over pieces of food for quite a while. Olivia on the other hand is all about actual food and not blended one. She loves grabbing her food and eating it, maybe because she sees her brother doing it? And I just love it. I love having a baby that loves food and would at least try everything I put in front of her.

It is messy but George loves feeding her and it also helped George try new foods (his sister is eating it so he is at least trying it). With George things weren’t that fun though, he would eat but he wasn’t a huge baby led weaning fan. He would gladly let you feed him instead. But Olivia loves her food and if you follow me on Instagram you probably already know that.

Some her favourite foods include:

  • Peas & carrots in tomato sauce
  • Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Chia & strawberry or banana pudding for breakfast
  • Apple/carrots/banana baby muffins
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Pancakes
  • Ham & cheese sandwich
  • Tuna sandwich
  • Pea fritters

Let me know if you would like to read a post on what Olivia eats in a day! What are some of your little ones favourite recipes?

  1. I am wondering if I will do more of this with my third child! I am a little more confident than I was with my first.

    1. If I am completely honest I feel more confident with my second than the first one as well. But I think it really depends on the baby as well, some babies adapt to BLW easier than others!

  2. My son LOVES tomato sauce. He is also a picky eater and his tastes change daily. One thing he does love is tomato sauce and anything crunchy but easy to bite in to. It makes it a little easier when deciding what goes on his plate come meal time.

    1. Thank you for your comment! Knowing what they really like saves so many tantrums and thrown away meals, doesn’t it? My son loves tomato sauce as well, so he pretty much requests pasta and tomato sauce daily!

      1. I think us starting young did wonders! Also remember they go through phases. My son loved it until about 13 months and then wouldn’t touch it for a few months. Now he’s back to eating it again. 🙈 we try to hide it in quesadillas and Mac n cheese. It works!

  3. I am such a fan of BLW! Pea fritters are such a great idea! My son is 13 months old, and when we started solids and BLW at 4 months, he was a big eater right away. He loves to try anything! His favorite is goat cheese risotto!

  4. It is so fun to have them experience all the new flavors and textures! My first loved pieces of foods, but my second prefers soups, and purées. My older one also loves to feed baby brother!
